MPCA Community Calendar
BYO Friday Night Gatherings: From 5:00 to 7:00 pm, every Friday — will resume in January 2012.
Bring your own beverage (including glasses), and a simple appetizer to share. Please don't forget to take home all leftovers and trash.
Walking: Walkers are meeting at 8:00, Monday through
Friday, at the corner of Cushing Rd. and Lubberland Dr. Sometimes we just
walk out to Bay Rd and back, sometimes around Smith Garrison, sometimes
into Newmarket for coffee or breakfast (usually on Fridays). It varies depending on people's
interests and time constraints.
Other groups abound: Contact a Community Life committee
member (see right column) for information on book groups, sewing/knitting
group, bunco, poker, etc.

Steps for Preparedness
In light of incidents we’ve faced recently — December’s
ice storm and now an epidemic of swine flu, many have asked about steps
we can take — as individuals and families, or as a community, to
be prepared to face the special stresses these kinds of events can bring.
None of us is truly expert in this area, but many of us have some background,
resources, and experiences to share. Here are a few resources to help.
- Latest and greatest about Swine Flu in the U.S. from the Centers for
Disease Control: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/?s_cid=swineFlu_outbreak_internal_001
- Current travel alerts from the U.S. Department of State: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_1766.html
- Information for families at PandemicFlu.gov — many tips are useful
for planning for any kind of disruption: http://www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/individual/index.html
- A checklist of suggested items to keep on hand, also from PandemicFlu.gov.
Even if you’re not worried about a pandemic, many of these would
be useful for a prolonged winter storm or other event. http://www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/individual/index.html
- In planning your pantry, don’t forget the panic factor — that
is, when the winter storm is expected, it’s harder to buy batteries
and water: http://www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/individual/checklist.html
- Because self-sufficiency is central to the belief of the Mormon Church,
their website is a good source of information about building a pantry,
with guidelines on what to put away and how (and how long) to store different
kinds of food: http://www.providentliving.org/channel/1,11677,1706-1,00.html
- Plan ahead if you want to connect a generator to your home. It should
be installed by a licensed electricia
